There will be accumulation of mucin like substance in an
affected cell . This mucin is produced by the combination of protein and
carbohydrate , termed as mucopolysaccharide and it is chiefly found in ground
substance of connective tissue . The mucin may be either connective tissue
mucin or epithelial mucin .
I . Connective tissue mucin - This type of mucin is found where the
connective tissue is present particularly in umbeluical cord , matrix of
cartilage , vitreous humour of the eye and pulp of tooth . This type of mucin
forms two types of ingredients like hyaluronic acid and chondroitinn sulphuric acid . Under
certain circumstances , as found in myxomas or myxoedema , there will be mucoid
degeneration . it is also found in collagen disease , filariasis etc .
II . Epithelial mucin
– This is found in epithelial lining of respiratory tract , nasopharynx ,
gastro-intestinal tract , genito urinary tract . During inflammatory condition
such as in common cold , large amount of mucin will produce . Carcinoma of stomach , large bowel , breast ,etc
may produce mucinous change . It may be called colloid carcinoma or mucnous
carcinoma or mucoid carcinoman .
